Suicidal Alentejo (2021)

The region of Alentejo, Portugal, has the highest suicide rate in the world.

It occurs in the more rural areas of the interior of the country and affects both men and women.

The methods are several : hanging, poisoning, drowning, shotgun.

Specialists agree that the reason for this social phenomena is cultural and not material, and the locals see it as normal and even honorable.

In Alentejo euthanasia is a way of life and a collective practice.
