CONGO'S GOLD

Documentary | 2018 | Col | 22m

Summary

Congo's Gold was started in July 2017, when three journalists travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to report on the increased activity of illegal gold mining in the country's northeast. Everything went as planned until July 14, 2017. That day saw four park rangers and a civilian murdered by fighters in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is assumed that the goal of the deadly ambush was to get control over an illegal gold mine to resume digging. We were there at the time of the attack. We decided to continue our investigation to find out if these deaths in a distant jungle are connected to daily life in the rich world. And if this international market can be linked to the ongoing cirkel of violence in DR Congo due to this country's precious natural resource, which can be found in our jewelry and the devices we depend on, such as phones and laptops.
